Types of Hearing Loss
Hearing loss can develop at any age for a variety of reasons. The most common forms of hearing loss are sensorineural, conductive or a combination of both (mixed).
Sensorineural Hearing Loss
Senorineural hearing loss results from inner ear or auditory nerve damage. This is the most common type of hearing loss and typically it is irreversible and permanent. People with Sensorineural hearing loss experience a lack of intensity of sound (loudness) and in some in cases a lack of clarity - even when sounds, particularly speech, are loud enough.
Conductive Hearing Loss
Conductive hearing loss occurs when the passage of sound through the middle ear is blocked, causing the sound intensity (loudness) to diminish. Common causes are impacted earwax or a middle ear infection.
